2006 PACK 940 PINEWOOD DERBY RULES

The Pinewood Derby is designed to be a learning experience for a boy. It enables him to design, construct and detail his own car with adult supervision. The race itself is an opportunity to enrich competition, sportsmanship and sharing.

  1. The car must be built using the materials of the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit (BSA cat. No. 17006). This includes the block of wood (body), nails for axels and wheels.
  2. The Cub Scout with some adult guidance should build cars. Parents are encouraged to build their own car. This is a great way to teach your scout how. Plus you may race your car (Jan 27).
  3. Cars entered in prior year’s races CANNOT be entered in this year’s race.
  4. Each car must pass inspection at registration in order to compete. Cars will only be accepted for entry during the registration/weigh-in period.
  5. The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 and ¾ inches.
  6. The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
  7. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces (141.7 grams). No loose materials of any kind (for example, lead shot) are permitted in or on the car. The car may be hollowed out and built up to the maximum weight by the addition of wood or metal only, provided it is securely built into the car.
  8. Wheel bearings, washers and bushings on the wheels or axels are prohibited. No "Hub capping" or covering of the outer tires or wheels are allowed. The car shall not ride on any type of springs.
  9. Nails (axels) must be inserted and glued into the slots provided with the car kit. The wheelbase may not be lengthened or shortened. Axles may be cleaned and polished without cutting groves.
  10. The width of the wheel’s surface touching the track may not be altered. No wafering or rounding of the wheel’s surface is allowed. Only the spur or molding mark can be sanded to smooth the surface.
  11. No oil, grease or silicone spray may be used on the axels or wheels.
ONLY POWDERED GRAPHITE IS ALLOWED AS A LUBRICANT.
  12. No part of the car can extend beyond the starting line and/or starting pin.
  13. The nose of the car must be wide enough for easy placement in starting gate (3/8" recommended).
  14. The car must be freewheeling with no starting devices.
  15. Decals and other decorations are permitted provided that they are within all rules as specified in the Official Grand Prix Pinewood derby Kit (BSA Cat. No. 17006).
  16. The car will be impounded and cannot be altered in any way or handled by anyone except the race officials and starters after the weigh-in.
  17. All cars registered in competition will remain impounded until completion of the race. Cars will be returned after the race, and at no other time.
  18. A repair time of two (2) minutes will be allowed for repairs on cars that are damaged while racing at the judges’ discretion and under a judge’s supervision.
  19. All decisions of the judges are final, with no exceptions or appeals.
  20. Over-zealous parents could cause the disqualification of their son’s car

REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A BOY’S RACE, FOR BOYS TO ENJOY!
